The Typing Of The Dead – NAOMI

Last week my friend Gareth sent me a faulty “The Typing Of The Dead” NAOMI Cartridge

He said the cart was not working, in adition the cart arrived pretty destroyed (one of the connectors was totally destroyed), so i desoldered the Mask ROMS

After 8 hours of soldering (i still dont have  a SOP44 socket) i dumped the 18 maskroms

Unfortunally one of the roms seems faulty (i tried to redump it 4 times (desoldering it and soldering it again) and allways got the same crc)

Anyways the game works pretty well at Makaron emulator, so i had a look into the damaged rom and noticed that only sound that was there.

So IC15 needs to be redumped :(

Got another faulty “The Typing Of The Dead” Cartidge ? Just contact me :)

solder the bad rom to the adapter & cool it in a freezer or use freezer-spray.

    then try dumping it again.

system80 thats what some mame devs told me, i did it twice (even i left it one entire night at the freezer), i just ordered a SOP44 shocket to dump the other carts i got and will give it a seccond try when it arrives.
I wonder if my freezer cant cold it enought …
I will try to get me a freezer-spray anyways, its worth the try

    Hi Alex,
try the opposite, WARM it before reading.
An hairdryer shuold be enough, eventually try with a hot air gun (do not go to melting point, anyway.)

Just tried it, same result, but im not going to give it up, im waiting for the sockets to dump the rest of my carts, and i will get me a freezer can to try to redump it.
    Thanks for the ideas

    Hi Alex,
I just got a long email from my friend KIRMO, and he has some suggestion for your faulty maskrom.
You can try to keep it cool/frozen while reading it using a Peltier Cell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling).
KIRMO’s suggestion is to use an aluminum “finger” (a small bar of aluminum, the same size of the IC you want to read, and 3/4mm. thick).
Use some electrolitic paste (the same you use for microprocessor contact with fans) to insure a perfect connection from the IC to the “finger” and from the “finger” to the Peltier Cell.
With such a system you can continuosly cool down the IC while reading it.

KIRMO says it’s a very efficient way to cool them, if you like you can even attach a thermal probe to the finger and regulate the cell tension to keep it at a steady level.
